5. Class for Four of Hot Honey and Sweet Returns
When Ames Russell crafted his first batch of hot honey, he drew on the traditions of generations of Appalachian Russells who came before him. His grandfather always placed a dish of honeycomb on his farm table for guests, imparting warmth and sweetness with his simple gesture. Ames distributed his first batch of hot honey to friends and family as Christmas gifts in 2015. His mixture of sweet clover and floral wildflower honeys with de árbol red chili peppers was such a hit that Ames eventually quit his day job to devote his life to honey. The results have been, well, sweet—and hot. Learn about AR’s Hot Southern Honey products and his new cookbook. Then see how they can be used in a cooking class for four in Ames' Church Hill home with Ames’ daughter, Chef Helen Russell of @dankfood.
6. Oro’s Buono Spring Pasta!
Every other week, over a 12-week period, you’ll receive the ingredients and recipe for a specialty pasta dish, each inspired by the season and current market offerings. You’ll be enrolled in the Oro Seasonal Pasta CSA (community-supported agriculture) for the spring months. Each dish makes two to four portions and comes with a curated recipe by Oro founder, Chef Laine Myers. Despite its lack of a brick-and-mortar space, this year Oro was recognized by Eater DC as one of the Top 22 Restaurants in Richmond. Most of Oro’s pastas are unfamiliar to the average consumer, and education is as important a pillar of their business as the locally sourced ingredients and thoughtfulness behind each offering. From plump, Sardinian-inspired culurgiones, which double as works of art dotted with delicate imprints, to wavy red-wheat radiatorre with grains sourced from Virginia and seasonal hits such as ramp or corn ravioli, Oro is reimagining the pasta scene in Richmond. Restrictions: Pick up at the Farmers Market at St. Stephen's, 9 a.m. to noon.
7. "Vineyard Vibes"
16" by 20" Framed Abstract Painting by Betsy Moore Fine Art. Betsy Moore enjoys a lifelong love affair with color, line and design. As far back as she recalls, she has felt closely connected with the visual world. Her artistic mother recognized her gifts early on and encouraged her to paint. At Mary Baldwin College (University), she explored her drawing and painting, resulting in a double major in Fine Art and English. After college, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts to pursue an additional degree in Interior Design. Eager to expand her artistic education upon graduation from VCU, Moore attended The Parsons School of Design/The New School in Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy. In Italy, she focused on all aspects of design and architecture, including architectural rendering and perspective drawing, tools that served her well in her design business. During the last 30 years, Moore built a successful interior design business, oftentimes purchasing art for her clients' projects. Moore believes art to be very personal and subjective. Her influences include the world around her as found in nature, interiors or abstract color and pattern association in everyday life. Betsy Moore's work can be seen currently at Provisions at Fine Creek in Powhatan, Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA, where she is an artist in residence and Gates Interiors in Richmond or Turn Key Interiors in Powhatan, VA.
